I donât know why I went with her, but I did. Was it her eyes? Her smile? Her body? She intrigued me. No needless chatter. No unnecessary games. Just a smile and a look. When she scanned my body, I felt a sudden spasm in my stomach. It dropped down below my belly. I hadnât felt this in several months. When she held out her hand, said Come home with me and motioned me to join her, I clasped her hand and we walked away from the bar.
Her apartment wasnât far up the river walk.
As we entered, she turned on a dim lamp near the couch and tossed the mail sheâd gotten from the box in the lobby onto a table near the door. The complex had only been finished a year or two, so everything was still new. Sheâd furnished the apartment sparsely but with class. The couch and chair were a chocolate brown and had dark wooden arms. The coffee table matched.
She drew back the long drapes that lined one wall. A small balcony was outside. It overlooked the water taxi mooring. The view was stunning. At this time of night, the best parts of the city glowed over the small park and the water.
âNice view,â I commented, looking out onto the balcony as she unlocked the sliding glass doors.
âItâs one of the few things that make up for the high rent,â she commented. She slid open the glass door and went out onto the balcony. I followed her. We both looked out onto the water for a few minutes, not speaking. We hadnât said twenty-five words since we started to come here.
âItâs a beautiful night tonight, isnât it,â she ventured without looking at me.
âItâs that time of year,â I answered for lack of something intelligent to say. I guess I was out of practice at this. I couldnât believe I just said that.
She smiled at me and we stood there for a few more minutes. I guess my attempt at conversation had fallen short of its mark.
âLet me go slip into something more comfortable,â she said as she walked into the bedroom.
I followed her. âWouldnât the bed fit that bill?â I asked.
She turned and looked at me. âAre you always so direct?â
âProbably,â I smiled. âI have a short attention span. I have to say what Iâm thinking, or Iâll forget.â
She was within armâs reach, so I extended mine and drew her to me. She didnât balk at my bold advance, but slowly slid into my arms as though she belonged there.
I kissed her. It seemed like it had been so long since I kissed anyone, I mean, really kissed anyone. Iâd forgotten how good a womanâs lips could feel. They were warm, soft, and pliant. Something I could sink into very easily.
I hugged her into me as she returned the kiss. She seemed to think it was a nice feeling, too. We pressed our lips together. Her tongue finally found its way into my mouth.
